How to Use Learning Activities
(Note: Developed for Ontario educators to support assisted remote learning, teachers can use these Learning Activities in class to guide students through the curriculum. If you are an Ontario teacher, you can access the Learning Activities and in-depth teacher guides through the virtual learning environment provided by the Ontario Ministry of Education. We are also sharing the Learning Activities here to support learning at home.)
Intended for guided instruction, Learning Activities provide deep learning of the Grade K-8 Ontario Curriculum. They are organized by topic (or strand) for each subject.
An adult should review Learning Activities before guiding students through them to ensure understanding and to prepare for discussion. The review prior to discussion with a student may not be needed for Grades K-3.
Learning Activities are divided into three sections. Using the text prompts provided, adults should guide students through in the following order:
- Minds On: Introduces the learning concepts to be explored in the Learning Activity.
- Action: Offers a focused activity to explore the content and discover key concepts.
- Consolidation: Provides students with an opportunity to deepen understanding and reflect on learning.
Depending on the student and topic, the time required to complete Learning Activities may vary. It is most important that the student is guided through the material, and that the topics are understood and applied in discussion and answers to questions.
How to Use Resources for Learning
Resources for Learning are curated by educators and support learning the Ontario Curriculum. Ideal for reinforcing specific learning or self-guided exploration of a subject area, students are encouraged to read, watch, listen or play to build their understanding and knowledge.
How to Use Apply the Learning
Apply the Learning prompts provide students with opportunities to explore each subject area in an applied and hands-on way. These can range from learning prompts for creative projects at home to self-guided research challenges. These are often designed to be used with TVO resources shared in the section above.
How to Use Vocabulary Lists
Vocabulary lists pinpoint key terms and concepts students should be able to identify and understand as they progress in learning the subject. They reflect the Ontario Curriculum students explore at that grade level and can be shared as an introduction to a subject or topic (strand), or a way to review what has already been learned.
