The Arts

How to Use These Resources

TVO Learn is designed to meet each student where they are on their learning journey. Learning Activities are comprehensive and require guided instruction from an adult, while Resources for Learning, Apply the Learning prompts and Vocabulary lists work well to reinforce specific skills or to enable independent exploration of a subject. Use these helpful tips to get the most from TVO Learn.

Curriculum Overview

In the Grade 7 arts curriculum, learners are encouraged to be creative every day.

  • In grade 7 Dance, students refine their kinesthetic awareness and use all the elements of dance (body, space, time, energy, relationship) to create dance works that express a point of view about a variety of issues, concepts, and themes.
  • In grade 7 Drama, in addition to role/character, students incorporate the elements of relationship, time and place, tension, focus, and emphasis in drama works they create, and apply their knowledge of the elements in analyzing drama works.
  • In addition to creating and interpreting music in grade 7 Music, students analyze the role of music in their lives and the ways in which music has changed in response to a variety of historical, cultural, and other influences.
  • In grade 7 Visual Arts, students’ own art making becomes infused with elements from popular culture as they continue to make compositional decisions and to use a variety of materials and techniques to generate and produce two- and three-dimensional works of art, as well as multimedia forms.

The arts curriculum is divided into four strands:

  • Dance
  • Drama
  • Music
  • Visual Arts

Apply the Learning

Choose from the following to consolidate learning across The Arts.

    • What type of dance are you familiar with? If it is a traditional dance, is it showcased in the mainstream media? Do the media depictions give an accurate idea of the dances of your community as you experience them? What and how could you change that?

    • Reflect on how dance can shape a person's identity and influence the narrative around that person?
    • How can you show bullying with the same set of movements (a dance phrase) but modified to show from various perspectives of a variety of people?

    • Research how the dances of the Acadians evolve when they were forced to immigrate to Louisiana? What factors influenced this evolution?

    • Create a list of sounds you could use to help listeners visualize the action of a radio drama.

    • Create a graphic organizer that explains the differences and what you would need to develop a drama for a recording studio versus the classroom, a street or mall performance, or an arts night performance.
    • Create a chant to build spirit for an organization or community. How might you communicate your message through the elements of music you focused on?
    • Reflect on some television shows or movies you have experienced that use the conventions of flashback and flash forward. How are these conventions used to showcase turning points and major decisions in the characters' lives?
    • Consider an artistic painting of your choice. Create a composition to represent the painting. Which instrumental sounds might you use to represent the colours in the painting?
    • Make a list of your favourite songs. How might you sort the songs into categories of music that connect us, divide us, or calls us to action?

    • Create a personal mandala to show opposing perspectives - the shows both unity and opposing forces

    • View two different pieces of art work. Explore what mood is created by the artist in each painting? Think about the relationship between artistic intent and expressive work.
    • Make a cityscape that would serve as a background in an animated short movie using different techniques.
    • Compare the ways in which Impressionist artists and contemporary Cree artists depict nature. How are they different?
    • How does visual arts and media influence the individual and society?
